Client: Kay El Bar Guest Ranch
direct mail | 11” x 17” | single-fold | cmyk

Challenge: The client was seeking a newsletter to send to their current clients and prospects for new business. Kay El Bar is a quaint, authentic guest ranch in Wickenburg, Arizona and they were looking to improve the vacancy of the guest ranch.

Solution: Envisioning a great place to ride and relax, and that’s just what we did. With a western style motif, duotones for photos, and choose a western style font for the masthead, it gave it a good old western feel. The contemporary gradient background was used throughout and allowed the photos and art to pop. I wanted to reserve my saddle and get up on my horse. The newsletter was well received and looking forward to the next issue.

Arizona Game and Fish Department: Gila Monster Poster

Client: Arizona Game and Fish Department
informational | 36” x 24” | cmyk

Challenge: To produce a poster about Gila Monsters that would be both informational and graphically appealing. The poster would tell the story about the mysteries and myths of Gila Monsters.

Solution: The idea of having larger than life Gila Monsters was a great way to get the readers attention. The supplied photos were cutout to make like they were crawling on the poster. The smaller illustrations with captions were put in boxes to organize the space and also frame the copy in the center. This way your eye was forced to read the copy starting from the headline and work your way down. Earthtone colors were selected and a bright, red header was a great way to pop the title. Thus, the Gila Monsters and the red header became the center of interest. The poster turned out great and the client loved it.

Gilbert High School: 2008 Football Schedule Poster

Client: Gilbert High School
promotional | 24” x 18” | cmyk

Challenge: The client wanted something that the kids would keep and hang on their wall. The football schedule also had to be incorporated so the goal was to create something memorable.

Solution: The concept of flying footballs came to mind so we created a single, flaming football that was created in Photoshop that become the center of interest. The school colors were black and yellow, so the palette was set. With a big, bright yellow stenciled like font headline, you couldn’t mistake it for the Tigers. From there, the photo insets told the story. The client loved the burning football and the tiger scratches in the background.

informational | 24” x 36” | cmyk

Challenge: As an informational poster, I had the challenge of organizing fifteen different bird species within a certain amount of space.

Solution: With so much information to fit in, we had to create a flow of organization that would be easy for the reader. The main headline was used to get your attention while the dramatic cutout photo of the Osprey came into play and became the center of interest. From there, that lead you to the copy block in the center. The dark sky background mixed well with bright, circular photo frames gave the reader an easy flow from left to right. After playing with design elements and spacial relationships, the poster came out great and was well received.

Arizona Game and Fish Department: Invasive Species Campaign

Client: Arizona Game and Fish Department
campaign | posters, signage, direct mail, billboards, rack cards | cmyk

Challenge: Quagga mussels, an invasive species have invaded Arizona. The challenge was to come up with an awareness campaign for recreational boaters who use the lakes. The effect was to have boaters inspect and clean their boats after each use to avoid the spread.

Solution: With this in mind, we used a bold headline that was yellow and black as color choices. The idea of a caution/warning sign was the concept. Keeping the graphic simple with a cutout of the mussel and a few bullet points, we were hoping for a fast read. The campaign was successful and expanded to signage, direct mail, billboards and rack cards.

campaign | 8.5” x 11” | cmyk

Challenge: The Barcelona Steakhouse was looking for a campaign that was classical, simple and would reflect their delicious entrees.

Solution: The idea of a photo dominant ad mixed with little text and an elegant black background was just the right ingredients. The custom CMYK black background contrasted the bright, vibrant colors and helped the ad snap. Unfortunately, we had to downplay the food photos because of the quality. It’s important to have a food specialist photographer shoot your food because bad food photos can break an ad. Overall, using simple design with bright colors, the client was very happy and the ads ran.

Challenge: Create a brochure that was informational, exciting and got the readers attention. A leave behind that would get you excited about the company.

Solution: The client loved the cover concept as a magazine cover. It was a great way to get the readers attention and we were able to use a supplied 3D rendering which worked very well. The content was about the retail expansion and locations of the Vestar Development properties. On the inside, shopping bag icons were placed on the map to show current locations and give a retail feel. The photos were placed in Polaroid® like frames with a snapshot appearance. Overall, the client was very pleased and it was another creative solution for organizing information.

Arizona Game and Fish Department: Invasive Species Proposal to the State of Arizona

Client: Arizona Game and Fish Department
proposal | 8.5” x 11” | interior: 154 pgs. | cmyk

Challenge: Working with the Arizona Invasive Species Advisory Council committee, the objective was to come up with a management plan that would be proposed to the governor and the state of Arizona. The proposal detailed the problems, solutions and implementations on how the state would fight invasive species.

Solution: Organizing the proposal was vital, so we composed it into seven sections which were color coded, this helped the reader with finding information. It included intensive tables, charts and photos which made it visually arresting for the reader for such a boring topic. With copy and photos supplied, I worked with a number of committee members to accomplish this. The size was 8.5” x 11” with no bleeds which made printing more affordable. With minor revisions, the proposal made it to the governors desk and was well received.

Client: Arizona Antelope Foundation
hardcover/softcover/wrap | 6” x 9” | interior: black & white | 192 pgs. | cmyk

Challenge: This book seeks to educate the public about pronghorns and serves as an advocate for the benefit of Arizona’s pronghorn. The objective was to entice the pronghorn fan to pick up the book.

Solution: Keeping the cover simple, the client hired an illustrator for the cover and did a superb job. Note the details on its coat and horns. The color palate was chosen from the illustration. Using the Paperback font for the cover and interior, the typography was an easy read. On the inside, intense tables, maps and charts were assembled along with photo retouching. Krause Creative spearheaded the print management team which included working with pre-press, printer, laminator and the book binder. A softcover and hardcover version was produced along with a wrap for the hardcover. Clean and simple, the book is a great read and you can judge a book by its cover.

Challenge: This book is a true story of wildlife in early Arizona told through the historic accounts of scientists and settlers, hunters and history makers. With over 400 pages, the challenge was to engage the reader with the history of Arizona.

Solution: Using a vintage cover approach and the use of duo tones and old photo frames, it gave the appearance of old time Arizona.
